Rocky Mountain Power on Monday announced plans to build a 66-turbine wind farm at the reclaimed Dave Johnston coal mine in Converse County.
The Glenrock Wind Energy Project will contribute 99 megawatts of renewable energy for Rocky Mountain Power’s parent company, PacifiCorp. That’s enough electricity to power almost 30,000 homes.
Barring delays in regulatory approval, the General Electric wind turbines could be operational by October 2008, according to the company.
“We are pleased to announce plans for a new Wyoming wind energy facility that will benefit customers by adding new cost-effective renewable energy to our electrical system, as part of a comprehensive strategy to achieve a more balanced mix of resources used to generate electricity,” Rocky Mountain Power President Richard Walje said in a prepared statement.
The proposed project site is located entirely on land owned by the company and encompasses more than 14,000 acres, a portion of which includes the former mine site. The former Dave Johnston coal mine operated from 1958 to 2000, supplying the primary source of fuel for the company’s nearby Dave Johnston Power Plant.
