Against the current: nationalize wind and impose moratorium

ADQ [l’Action démocratique du Québec party] deputy Claude Roy characterizes wind development in Québec as anarchic, savage, and disrespectful.

The deputy from Montmagny-L’Islet and critic of the official opposition in the matter of the environment thus counts on presenting a motion aiming to nationalize wind energy and, meanwhile, impose a moratorium to stop all wind projects.

The proposal, which goes against the trational position of the ADQ, is far from achieving unanimity.

Several groups of East-Québec citizens also denounce the industry’s anarchic development. Roméo Bouchard, cofounder of l’Union paysanne [Rural Union] and editor of the essay collection “L’éolien – Pour qui souffle le vent?” [“Wind energy – for whom does the wind blow?”], believes that wind development doesn’t actually live up to its claims, which need to be reviewed immediately.

In contrast, environmentalist groups worry that a moratorium does nothing but entrench delays for Québec’s wind energy development. André Bélisle, president of l’Association québecoise de lutte contre la pollution atmosphérique [Québec Association Against Air Pollution], for his part considers wind energy to be essential for attaining the goals of the Kyoto protocol.

Claude Roy will present his motion during the caucus of l’Action démocratique du Québec, at the end of August.
