There are moves to limit the spread of wind farms in the Cooma-Monaro and Snowy River shires in south-east New South Wales.
Jim Litchfield of the landscape preservation organisation, REAL Monaro, says both it and the Cooma Historical Society are calling for prime wind turbine sites to be placed on the heritage register.
Cooma-Monaro Shire Council has yet to receive a development application (DA), but the neighbouring Snowy River has two DAs, with one tipped to begin construction by the end of the year.
Mr Litchfield says the groups want to preserve the areas known as the Three Brothers, Hudson Peak and the Jindy Brother, which are the highest points between the coast and the Snowies.
But he says the impact wind farms have on communities is his biggest worry and he agrees with comments made by the state Member for Goulburn, Prue Goward.
“One of the big problems with these is that they are incredibly divisive and it is just not here that it has happened, but practically in every area they go,” he said.
“They cause a lot of division in the community and that is just not good for rural communities. In fact, Pru Goward, she is on record in State Parliament, she spoke a little while ago about the Taralga experience and how it has completely devastated community harmony in that area.”
