The Ministry of Defence is calling for a red light to be fitted to an approved 60 metres high meterological mast in open countryside at Newfield Moor near Sibbaldbie.
It says the non-blinking constant light should have a setting of 200 candalas and is needed to avoid potential risks to air safety.
The proposed light has to stand out for pilots wearing night vision apparatus.
The temporary mast was approved by councillors in March despite opposition from a number of residents and Lockerbie Community Council.
Wind Energy (Newfield) Ltd withdrew an application for a second mast while talks were underway with council officers and Historic Scotland.
However, today, along with the amendment to the first mast, are seeking approval of a second met mast. Both, they say, are needed to collect data to see if Newfield Moor is viable for a wind farm development. And both applications are recommended for approval by Annandale and Eskdale councillors at their meeting in Lockerbie Town hall.
Historic Scotland says it is satisfied that second mast 600 metres further from an originally proposed site will not impact on the setting of the Firtree Hill Fort Scheduled Ancient Monument. However, it has generated objections from members of the public and Lockerbie Community Council who fear the met mast is “a crucial step” towards plans for “a large wind farm development in a totally inappropriate site.”
