Xcel seeks OK to build wind farm near Austin

Xcel Energy Inc. said Monday that it is seeking regulatory approval to build a 100-megawatt wind farm in Mower County.

The Minneapolis-based utility company plans to build the project, dubbed Grand Meadow Wind Farm, at a site near Austin. It would be Xcel’s first company-owned wind farm in Minnesota.

The project is expected to occupy 40 square miles and feature 67 wind turbines. Xcel has a contract with Escondido, Calif.-based enXco Development Corp. to build the wind farm. Xcel expects the farm to be operational by the end of 2008.

Xcel is seeking to add between 3,000 and 3,400 megawatts of wind-generated power to its Minnesota system by 2020 to meet energy standards passed by the state.
