Massive wind farm set to fan out even further

A massive Lothians wind farm is set to grow after proposals for nine additional turbines were lodged with Scottish ministers.

Crystal Rig wind farm in the Lammermuir Hills has already been granted permission to triple in size in the next two years.

National Power Consultants, working on behalf of operators Fred Olson Renewables Ltd, intend to build the extra nine turbines alongside the 52 that were given the go-ahead in 2005. Of these, 29 will lie within the East Lothian Council area.

There are currently 25 turbines at Crystal Rig.

Project manager Clare Edwards said: “The Crystal Rig wind farm has been well received by both consultants and the community since 2002, when the original scheme was given the go-ahead.

“With the increased grid capacity available due to a connection to the nearby electricity line, it was clear that there was potential for further turbines at the site.”

Safety concerns were raised at the wind farm in 2005 after a 40 metre blade shattered and flew off the turbine.
