Wind farm funds may not return to community

Pyrenees Shire in central Victoria says the money it earns through the Waubra wind farm will not necessarily go back to the local community.

The company building the wind farm, Acciona, will pay the council $166,000 a year in rates.

Pyrenees Mayor Gabrielle Horvat says that money will be counted as general revenue.

But he says the council is yet to formally sign a rating agreement with the company

“We potentially could negotiate, but I’m pretty sure that the wind company would be very reluctant to go over that, what’s actually required of them. I suppose we have to just got through the formality of signing the agreement,” he said.
