Thanks to money from the Ontario government, the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve will study the potential development of a significant wind energy project at Point Grondine on the shore of Georgian Bay.
“Helping explore the viability of this project contributes toward the province’s goal of developing alternative, renewable sources of energy,” Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci said Tuesday in a release.
The reserve on Manitoulin Island is looking into the feasibility of erecting wind turbines to develop a 1,000-megawatt wind farm off Highway 637 southwest of Sudbury over the next 10 years.
The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation is providing $50,000 to the Wikwemikong Development Commission to conduct a wind monitoring study at three locations near Point Grondine.
“The economic benefits that could be derived from a successful project would help the Wikwemikong undertake other community development projects that create jobs and sustain a better quality of life,” said Bartolucci, who also chairs the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.
“In fostering these opportunities, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund has reclaimed its role as an important catalyst for economic, community and infrastructure development in the North.”
