Gamesa Energy USA officials are expected back in Johnstown today to pitch green energy.
It is the latest town hall meeting held by Gamesa, the Spain-based company that is building electricity-generating wind turbines statewide.
The meeting is slated from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Heritage Hall A on the Pitt-Johnstown campus.
Gamesa will provide details of the proposed Shaffer Mountain Wind Farm along the border of Somerset and Bedford counties.
The company’s plan to build 30 turbines there has drawn sharp criticism from property owners and environmentalists who are concerned about the turbines’ effects on the watershed and wildlife.
Gamesa’s presentation will include information on wind energy, turbine-construction plans and renewable energy.
The company is expected to field questions from the audience on its construction plans and on the impact of windmills on the environment.
Several groups, including the Central City Sportsmen’s Club and the Mountain Laurel Chapter of Trout Unlimited, have voiced fears that the project will adversely affect trout streams.
Gamesa said in its permit application to the state Department of Environmental Protection that the wind farm would not affect any stream in the project area.
Meanwhile, Gov. Ed Rendell on Tuesday dedicated the state’s latest wind farm – 13 Gamesa-built turbines in Schuylkill County. The company also is building wind farms in Cambria and Blair counties.
