Council objects to turbine plan

Belper Town Council has decided to object to proposals for the town’s first wind turbine.

Cllr Deborah Biss said she had been approached by a number of residents living close to the proposed development who are worried about the turbine’s height as well as the noise.

The 32.5 metres high grey turbine would be part of the county council’s new eco-school at the Former Parks School site on Bargate Road.

Although the development would make the new Herbert Strutt Primary one of the greenest schools in the county councillors said they were concerned about the impact to neighbours in the area.

Cllr Mick Potter said as well as being tall the turbine would have to have a large fence around it preventing people getting too close. He added: “They do make a horrendous noise.”

Councillors opted to object to the application. A final decision on the development is expected next month.
