Plans to build a wind farm on land in Bedfordshire have been refused by planning officers.
Energy company Nuon Renewables hoped to erect nine wind turbines at Airfield Farm, Podington, which it said could supply electricity to 11,000 homes.
Bedford Borough Council rejected the scheme saying the scale of the turbines would impact on nearby homes, historic park land and an ancient monument.
Nuon Renewables said the residents’ backing was disregarded by the council.
A spokesman for the energy company said seven out of ten residents preferred the scheme and an “opportunity to help combat global warming has been lost”, adding the scheme would have saved 45,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases a year.
In a planning report on Monday, Bedford Borough Council rejected the application for land near the Santa Pod race track.
The planning authority stated the turbines would be conspicuous and out of place in the rural landscape.
It added the scale would impact on living conditions of nearby residential properties, public footpaths and on listed buildings, the historic park and gardens at Hinwick House and effect an ancient monument, the Wold Moated Enclosure.
