Champaign County considers committee to look at wind turbines

A Union Township resident addressed the Champaign County commissioners Tuesday with his concerns about the possibility of wind turbines coming to the area.

Bob McConnell, of the 4000 block of East U.S. Route 36, urged the commissioners to create a committee to gather information about the wind towers and plan properly for the proposed construction in the county.

New York-based wind energy developer Everpower Renewables has proposed constructing 500-foot tall turbines in the eastern part of Champaign County, including Union, Wayne and Salem townships.

McConnell, a member of Union Township Neighbors United a group concerned about the proposed turbines, presented the commissioners with studies from other areas with wind turbines and voiced his concerns about the noise and size of the towers and the land use and value changes they could cause.

Commissioner Max Coates said Logan County formed a similar committee through the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office and that the commissioners expect an answer on the possibility of a Champaign County committee from the local prosecutor’s office later this week.

The commissioners do not have jurisdiction to decide whether the turbines come to the county, but Coates said a committee to improve understanding of the turbines would be beneficial.
