Villagers to view windfarm plans

Villagers living near Fakenham will get their first chance to see detailed plans for a five-turbine windfarm near their homes later this month.

E.On UK, one of the country’s biggest green power generators, wants to build the farm on land between the villages of Syderstone, Bagthorpe and Barmer.

It is staging the two-day exhibition so that residents and other interested people can see details of the scheme which, if approved, could generate power for up to 5,000 homes.

It is aimed at making a significant contribution to the East of England’s target of generating 14pc of electricity from renewable sources by 2010.

Ali Parker, developer for the project, said: “We believe it’s extremely important for us to keep the community fully informed about our plans and that’s why we have set up this exhibition.”

She explained that newsletters containing details of the proposals had already been sent to local people. “I’d certainly urge everyone to come along to see the plans, to talk to us about any issues they might have and to find out why we think this is such a great place for a windfarm,” she said.

Syderstone parish council told the EDP that it has yet to make public its official view about the proposal.

“We did not want to come to any decision either way until we had seen some detailed proposals. Once we have had the exhibition we will have a better idea of what people in the locality think about it,” said Brian Poulson, vice chairman of Syderstone parish council.

Mr Poulson said the proposed windfarm would be about one mile from the centre of Syderstone and the turbines would be 100m high to the blade tip. “We will be able to see in photo montages what the turbines will look like from different directions and their impact onto the rural landscape,” said Mr Poulson.

It is expected that the proposed scheme could come before planners towards the end of this year and, depending on progress of the application, it could be up to two years before it is built.

The public exhibition is on June 14 (2pm until 8pm) and June 15 (10am until 2pm) at the Amy Robsart (Syderstone) village hall. Anyone wanting information regarding the exhibition is asked to contact 02476 183541 or e-mail windclusters@eon-uk.com
