Talks are held over new site for windfarm

Plans are being discussed for a new windfarm that could power up to 11,000 homes on the site of a wartime airfield.

Renewable energy firm Enertrag UK is negotiating with landowners in a bid to build seven or eight wind turbines in Chedburgh ““ but one resident raised fears the 125m structures would ‘dwarf’ the landscape if given the go-ahead.

Proposals for the site were first raised nearly three years ago, but appear to have been revived after the Henry Smith Charity ““ which owns part of the land under discussion ““ agreed in principle to negotiate with the energy company.

Paul Long, of Assington Green, said: “These turbines are absolutely massive ““ they are only 5m shorter than the London Eye and they are going to completely dwarf anything we already have here.

“I’m not against them in an appropriate place, but they will dominate the upper end of the Glem valley, which is a very pretty river.

“I think it would spoil this part of Suffolk.”

Terry Chapelhow, project engineer for Enertrag, confirmed the project was in the early stages of negotiation.

“Windfarms alone are the cleanest form of energy generation on the market,” he said. “The turbines generate electricity without any transport or emissions ““ it’s totally sustainable.

“Modern wind turbines are not noisy and we keep them at least 700m away from any residential property.”

Richard Hopgood, director of the Henry Smith Charity, said: “The trustees have taken a view that the best interests of our beneficiaries would be best served by coming to an agreement with Enertrag.”
