The proposed Gathercauld windfarm has been reduced in size from 13 turbines to five.
Developer EnergieKontor made the announcement at its exhibition about the project at Craigrothie Hall last Thursday.
Project manager Mick McLoughlin said the change came after consultation about the impact on the area’s landscape, heritage and possible effects on radar at R.A.F. Leuchars.
Mr McLoughlin said the windfarm’s construction would take six months and the project was expected to cost about £7 million.
Ceres and District Environment and Amenity Protection Group placards outside the exhibition displayed slogans such as ‘Say No to Turbines’ and ‘Cherish Local Landscape’.
The action group had delivered 1000 leaflets in the lead-up to the exhibition to publicise the event.
Group spokesman Graham Lang said although the project had been scaled down now, the situation could change later.
“EnergieKontor’s representative could not give any guarantee that it would not be further developed in the future by them or others,” said Mr Lang.
Mr McLoughlin said the company would now consider the feedback it received from the public and decide whether to proceed with a planning application, expected “in the near future”.
“There’s a slight misunderstanding that local opposition per se is enough to stop a project,” he said.
