$250M Cavalier County wind farm OK'd

The state Public Service Commission has approved a $250 million wind project in Cavalier County.

The proposed development, south of Langdon, will have 106 wind turbines and generate 159 megawatts of power, enough to supply about 48,000 homes, officials said.

It will be the largest wind farm in the state to date, covering some 47½ square miles in Cavalier County.

FPL Energy LLC of Juno Beach, Fla., is building the project as part of a partnership with Minnkota Power Cooperative of Grand Forks, N.D., and Otter Tail Power Co. of Fergus Falls, Minn.

FPL officials said construction will start this month and should be completed by the end of the year.

Commissioner Tony Clark said with existing and proposed wind power projects, North Dakota could have about 500 megawatts of wind power by the end of the year.

“That is this side of a base-load coal plant,” he said.
