Developers of wind-power projects in Nova Scotia will have a better understanding of Environment Act requirements because of new information online.
A Proponents’ Guide to Wind Power Projects, on the Environment and Labour website, can help people prepare an Environmental Assessment Registration document.
“Environmental assessments promote better project planning by identifying and addressing environmental effects at the earliest stages,” said Mark Parent, Minister of Environment and Labour. “This guide will help proponents save time and money while further protecting the environment.”
Under the Environment Act, a generating facility that produces two megawatts or more of electrical energy from wind requires an environmental assessment.
The assessment promotes sustainable development by evaluating potential environmental effects of major developments. Since 2003, six wind-power projects, from Cape Breton to Yarmouth, have gone through the environmental assessment process.
As part of environmental assessments, mandatory public comment periods allow the public and government departments and agencies to express views and concerns about a registered project.
