Second chance for wind monitor

Controversial plans to install a wind monitoring mast next to a Shropshire reservoir have been submitted again.

Councillors rejected a scheme by South Staffordshire Water for the 60-metre mast at Chelmarsh reservoir, but managers have now applied for planning permission again.

Planning officer at Bridgnorth District Council, Richard Fortune, said the application was exactly the same as the one thrown out by councillors last month.

He said: “I think they have decided to enter the application again to see if members change their view. It will go to committee on July 2.”

The scheme caused concern among councillors and residents who feared it would signal the go-ahead for a wind turbine at the site in the future.

Chelmarsh Parish Council objected, and then members of the district council’s development control committee voted to refuse permission.

The committee’s vote went against the advice of planning officers, who had recommended the scheme for approval.

Clerk to Chelmarsh Parish Council, Elizabeth Yeomans, said it was difficult to see why councillors would change their opinion the second time around.

“On the basis it is exactly the same, the parish council is likely to endorse its previous decision,” she said.
