Residents protest plan to add 45 more windmills

Erasmo Nunez spent Mother’s Day close to his mom, Esperanza. But instead of a quiet dinner, the two protested Sunday night against windmills proposed near their Indian Avenue homes.

“This is about the windmills,” Esperanza Nunez said.

“We’re completely against them,” her son added.

The mother-son duo joined about two dozen Coachella Valley residents holding steadily to signs at the windy corner of Thomas Avenue to oppose a plan to build 45 windmills off Indian Avenue across the street from their homes.

“We think it’s dangerous for our kids and unhealthy for our community,” Esperanza said as existing windmills whipped in the near distance. “We also think it’s unfair because it brings our property value down.”

Les Starks, who is fighting proposed windmills near his home in Snow Creek Village, came out because he said he sympathizes with the residents and their common cause.

“I think they’re taking a whole lot away from people who don’t have a lot to begin with,” Starks said, referring to the company pushing for the project.

“What they are taking away is their future,” he said. “Their property value will be worthless.”

A Riverside County Planning Commission meeting to discuss the project is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Coachella Valley Water District’s Forbes Auditorium at 85-995 Avenue 52 in Coachella.
