Committee kills Doyle proposal for renewable energy grants

Creating a new 30 (M) million dollar grant program to develop renewable energy technology gets the ax from the Legislature’s budget-writing committee Thursday.

Governor Doyle wanted grant money for companies and researchers that develop solar power and other renewable energy technologies.

But Republicans on the Joint Finance Committee today objected to tapping the state’s recycling fund to pay for the program.

Democratic Senator Bob Jauch of Poplar argued for it, saying earmarking the money would be good for the state and the economy.

But on a tie vote, the additional spending was kept out of the budget.

The budget being crafted by the committee must pass both houses and be signed by Doyle before it becomes law.
