First hurdle stumble for windfarm plans

Plans to build a windfarm on the moors above Littleborough have suffered a setback.

An application for the five turbines located just over the border in Yorkshire has been recommended for refusal by Todmorden Town Council.

Coronation Power hopes to build a total of 12 125m turbines at Crook Hill, seven of which are located in Rochdale.

Councillors recommended refusal because they felt the windfarm would damage the moorland, affect walkers, horse riders and cyclists and destroy peat bogs.

The proposals will now go to Calderdale Council, which will decide whether or not to grant planning permission.

A date is yet to be set for Rochdale Council to consider the scheme.

George Kelsall, of protest group the Friends of the South Pennines, said: “We are pleased with the decision but we know this is only the first step on a very long road.”

Paul Taylor, spokesman for Coronation Power, said: “We are obviously disappointed with Todmorden Town Council’s decision but we hope that when the applications go before Calderdale and Rochdale Councils they take into account the merits of the scheme, the context of renewable energy and national and local planning guidelines.”
