The recent study of the behavior of birds in Forward Energy’s proposed wind factor is riddled with inaccuracies, according to Dr. Jack Kaspar, professor emeritus of ornithology at the University of Wisconsin.
“Does it seem odd to anyone but me that the April 2005 through March 2006 bird study shows exactly what Forward Energy was looking for – even though it was compiled and analyzed by people who have far less professional experience than those who have written studies that are contrary to this one,” stated Dr. Kaspar. “Furthermore, the data does not support the conclusions.”
Horicon Marsh Systems Advocates (HMSA) has been fighting the proposed project since 2004. HMSA filed an appeal in the fall of 2006 with the Wisconsin State Court of Appeals opposing the Public Service Commission’s decision to allow Forward Energy to build the project. As of today, that decision is still pending.
The proposed project would consist of 133 wind turbines standing 400 feet tall over an area of 50 square miles (32,000 acres) within two miles of the Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge.
Anyone who has lived here for any length of time knows that the closer you get to the Horicon Marsh, the more birds you encounter. This is not true according to the 2005-2006 bird study, which clearly indicates to me that this is an inept study.
Not only is the study inept, but according to Dr. Kaspar, “the bird study was written in such a manner as if it/they were trying to hide something or confuse the reader.”
