A heated meeting was held to discuss the possibility of wind turbines being built on sites in north Sheffield.
Residents from Chapeltown and Ecclesfield voiced their fears over the plans at a meeting of Sheffield Council’s North Area Panel held at Chapeltown Methodist Church.
Councillors called the meeting to try to allay residents’ fears over the possibility of a wind farm being built on land at Hesley Wood, Chapeltown, Westwood Country Park in Tankersley or Smithy Wood and Butterworth farm, Ecclesfield.
All four sites are just suggestions at this stage but Sheffield
Council is keen to identify a site to help them achieve Government renewable energy targets.
Coun Trevor Bagshaw, who called the meeting, said: “The sites have been earmarked as potential sites purely because of wind speed and nothing else.
“We are not talking about a cut and dry deal.”
Any site the council does earmark would then have to be marketed to a developer, who would have to apply for planning permission.
“This is at a very, very early stage,” said Andrew Nolan, Sheffield Council’s head of Environmental Strategy.
“We called the meeting to explain how the planning process works and how you can become involved.
“Once a planning application has been submitted anyone is, of course, entitle to object but they must do this through the correct channels.”
Some residents raised concerns about the safety of wind turbines and others were unsure about the sustainability.
