Citizens lead the way, exposing LIPA's windfarm weaknesses

This week, two major studies have confirmed what many have been saying for a long time- the cost and impact of a proposed windfarm off of Jones Beach is much higher than has been reported by LIPA and Florida Light and Power. This project, now in its final death throes, should be allowed to quietly and peacefully expire.

The two significant reports, one by Dowling College, which showed the project will cost almost twice as much as initially reported, and the other, a photo simulation commissioned by the Town of Babylon, which showed that the windmills will be significantly more visible than a LIPA report stated, confirm findings made by civic groups almost a year ago. These were completed by members of the Nassau Shores, Biltmore Shores, Old Harbour Green, Shoreville and Breezy Point civic associations in Massapequa who spent hundreds of hours as volunteers poring over the details of the project. They are residents, business owners, financiers, civil employees and others from all walks of life. They worked without taxpayer funding and deserve credit for being vigilant citizens who are ever on watch protecting their communities.

It’s time LIPA put this issue aside and refocus its attention on alternative sources such as retooling the existing power plants. We already have studies that show this is the most cost effective way of increasing our energy sources.
