Nothing illustrates more graphically the erosion of our democratic rights than the way the wind industry is conducted.
Age-old laws that have served to protect our environment are being swept aside – why? The politicians responsible for this will say they have to make it easier for these foreign developers to push through their plans to industrialise our uplands and mountains with massive turbines.
We thought the idea of having an Assembly was that our rights would be protected and our views respected but the applications are coming in faster than before. As 60 to 70 per cent of the money these developers make comes from different renewable grants, which we, the consumers, are paying for through increased bills, it is obvious to anyone they are in it for the money.
It has been proved that the amount of CO2 they save and the amount of electricity they provide is minimal. It is no good them arguing that it’s either wind turbines or nuclear as the two cannot be compared in terms of providing energy. It would be like holding a flickering candle against an industrial central heating boiler.
If we complain, they accuse us of being nimbys but don’t we have the right to protect our quality of life? Are there no laws to protect our human rights?
It’s about time our so-called representatives in government honoured our human rights instead of repeating the old targets mantra.
