The new view from the beach: wind turbines

The view from the beach could be radically different soon with wind turbines replacing uninterrupted coastline before long.

The government is proposing to introduce a law to allow wind turbines to be built offshore, the Spanish daily El Pais reported on Tuesday.

They would stretch around 4,000 kilometres of Spain’s coastline.

The plan would bring Spain the same amount of energy as 25 nuclear power stations by 2020.

Felix Avia, from the head of research at the National Renewable Energy Centre, said: “Wind farms are essential if we are to meet EU targets of providing 20 percent of our energy from renewable sources by 2020.”

But the plan is expected to meet with opposition from fishermen, local residents ““ not to mention tourist organisations.
