Kendall looks to amend zoning regulations to include MET towers

The vote was unanimous when Town of Kendall officials were asked to set a date for a public hearing to consider amending zoning regulations as they apply to the feasibility of installing commercial wind energy conversions systems (CWECS) in the town.

The public hearing is scheduled for April 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the town hall. Comments from residents will be solicited at that time. According to the language of the local law that was introduced, “the planning board has researched, evaluated, created and provided a recommendation for”¦ ” requirements for installation of meteorological (MET) towers.

In the neighboring Town of Hamlin, two 199-foot monopole MET towers were installed. The towers measure wind velocity over an extended period of time and supply data on whether an area is a suitable location for wind towers. In Hamlin, the board approved the MET tower law in June.

Hamlin has subsequently formed a wind tower committee to research the pros and cons of the installation of a more extensive wind tower farm within the town limits as the town has been approached by a company that wishes to erect the towers.
