Orchid protection slows wind farm work

A rare orchid that has not been seen for 30 years is causing a delay to the construction of a wind farm in the Murchison, in north-west Western Australia.

Verve Energy plans to build two wind turbines on a farm near Kalbarri to back up the town’s irregular electricity supply from the south-west grid.

Peter Winner from Verve says the company is working with the Department of Environment and Conservation to protect the orchid’s habitat.

He says the start date for construction could be delayed several weeks while the details are finalised.

“The idea is to make sure that the areas where the orchid could grow are identified so that if the right conditions occur they could flower and bloom as they would normally do,” he said.
