Swift County supports wind power projects

Two wind power projects under consideration in Swift County won support Tuesday from the Swift County Board of Commissioners.

The commissioners adopted resolutions in support of separate wind farm proposals by Swift Winds LLC and Knight Energy LLC, reported Byron Giese, Swift County auditor.

The resolutions are needed by both projects as they seek Community-Based Energy Development status for their projects. The legislation is designed to encourage local ownership of wind projects. It provides advantages for community-based projects and also sets out rules on ownership.

In a related matter, the commissioners at the regular meeting Tuesday approved a resolution in support of renewable energy, calling on the state to obtain 25 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2025.

In other business, the commissioners approved a $50,000 low-interest loan for Custom Roto Mold in Benson.

Chuck Koenigs, interim director for the Swift County rural development agency, told the commissioners that the local board had recommended approval for the loan. It provides the funds at a net interest rate of 6 percent to be repaid in seven years.
