West Cumbria could be set for another windfarm row as a new site has been earmarked for development.
A 580-acre site at Weddicar, between Moresby and Frizington, is up for sale and is expected to be bid for by several parties who wish to install up to four turbines on the land.
The new plans come only a week after councillors voted to reject a similar scheme for a site at Pica.
The new land in question is a former opencast coal site, which closed in 1996, and is now subject of a Woodland Grant Scheme through the Forestry Commission.
One local resident is so strongly opposed to the possible windfarm that he is set to make an alternative bid for the site himself.
“Wind turbines would have a devastating affect on the area and I want them stopped,” he said. “Apart from the devaluing of houses, it will completely spoil the beautiful view of the Ennerdale valley. That’s part of the appeal of living here.”
The man only learned of the turbine plans when he requested further information from the seller’s estate agents after reading about the land going up for sale in The Whitehaven News.
He said that other people in the vicinity will be equally in the dark.
Geoff Leech, a resident of Whelpside Road that overlooks the land said he is concerned that plans for the windfarm had not been made public.
“It seems as if it’s been done via the back door and nobody has been told. Many people don’t want a windfarm on their doorstep ruining the skyline.”
The closing date for tenders is May 17.
