With two wind energy companies interested in leasing property in Sheldon Township, the subject of wind farms was a topic during Friday’s meeting of the Iroquois County Board’s Planning and Zoning Committee.
Terry Burton, a resident of Sheldon Township and a member of the Iroquois County Zoning Board of Appeals, talked with committee members about the proposed wind farms.
The proposed wind tower development location is a six-mile by four-mile area south of Route 24.
Burton said Navitas Energy began measuring wind data for some time and is ready to begin discussing lease agreements with Sheldon Township residents. While Navitas Energy is based in Minnesota, 77 percent of the company’s stock is owned by Gamesa, a Spanish company that manufactures wind turbines and develops and invests in wind farms.
He said Navitas is about 18 months away from going through the rezoning process to construct a wind farm. Before they can go before the committee, they must secure the lease agreements and have an engineered plan in place.
A second company, Airtricity, operates wind farms in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales and the United States. Burton said they recently began the process of collecting wind data, so are a bit further behind in the process.
