A campaign group that opposes the building of huge wind turbines across Wales is fielding two regional candidates in the National Assembly election.
Swatt (South Wales Alternative To Turbines) says it hopes to raise awareness about what it calls the Assembly Government’s “stealth policy to carpet the South Wales mining valleys with monstrous turbines up to 600ft high”.
John Jenkins will be standing in South Wales West and Caroline Evans in Mid and West Wales.
Mr Jenkins said, “As far as we can ascertain, such a programme has never been attempted before in Europe. 400ft high turbines are proposed at Gilfach Goch, for example, within 250 metres of houses.
“In Denmark and Germany, 80% of turbines are owned by locals, who reap the financial benefits and have put up with the disruption. Recently the German government decided to cut the massive unsustainable subsidies.”
Mr Jenkins claimed building turbines near homes would drastically cut their value.
He said there were numerous examples of research which suggested health problems were caused by the kind of low frequency whooshing noise associated with turbines.
