Wind farm hits another delay

A bid to have the first wind farm plan determined in north Northumberland has been put back again.

The application for a ten-turbine development at Moorsyde, near Berwick, will not be discussed by Berwick Borough Council on Tuesday.

Developers Your Energy Ltd said the delay was “frustrating” but campaigners Moorsyde Action Group (MAG) welcomed it because it means a key report can be taken into account.

The borough council confirmed that its planning report would include the Arup study into wind farm development.

The application was originally due to discussed in December, January and then February.

Shona Alexander, director of regeneration and development at the borough council, said: “We do not have all the necessary reports completed, so the Moorsyde wind farm application is not on the agenda for planning committee on April 10. The application is due to be considered at the next scheduled meeting of planning committee, on Tuesday, May 29.”

A MAG spokesman said: “We welcome the fact that the borough council has now decided to wait for the results of the local Arup ‘Wind Farm Development Study’ before bringing the Moorsyde application before the planning committee.

“Local people want a decision on this proposal which has blighted the area for over two-and-a-half years.

“However, we are just as concerned that applications for arrays of 360-410 ft-high turbines over large areas of our local landscape should be properly decided on planning grounds and with a proper concern for the damage that they would cause to local communities and to tourist businesses.”

Richard Mardon, managing director of Your Energy Ltd, said: “We understand that the additional studies they instigated back in January are taking a little bit longer than anticipated which is often the way.

“We are assured that we will go committee on May 29.

“It is a little frustrating but we are hopeful that the conclusion of the studies will confirm that this site is appropriate for a wind farm of this size and we can press on.”
