Commission to discuss wind farm

The Ellis County Planning and Zoning Commission will have a public hearing at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the third-floor courtroom of the Ellis County Courthouse.

The hearing will consist of two parts. First, a group of constituents from Catharine will request rezoning a small piece of property.

The second part of the hearing is expected to be heated. Competitive Power Ventures, the company developing the potential Ellis County wind farm, will request a conditional use zoning permit.

This wind farm would be located southwest of Hays and would consist of as many as 129 towers, which would connect to a transmission line owned by Midwest Energy.

These white towers could stand as much as 400 feet tall.

If approved by the commission, wind farm plans will shift to the Ellis County Commission for resolution.

The Ellis County Planning and Zoning Commission has received a considerable amount of feedback regarding this issue and expects a large turnout. Several concerned property owners also are expected to attend.

The commission consists of nine members, six of whom are expected to be present Wednesday. Two will be out of town, and one position is left vacant after Leo Dorzweiler’s resignation was accepted by the Ellis County Commission on Monday.

A quorum is five votes. Wednesday’s votes will pass with a simple majority.
