Denbighshire country residents are calling for the environmental winds of change to blow in a direction away from their homes.
Nantglyn residents have whipped up a storm this week over plans by two companies to build 29 wind turbines near their homes.
The Welsh Assembly renewable energy document TAN8 has designated parts of the area around the village has land for the siting of wind turbines.
WindPower Wales plans to build 16 turbines, each 100 metres high, next to the existing Tir Mostyn site, which is home to 25 turbines.
And Tegni held an open day for residents to reveal plans for 13 turbines, with a height of 125 metres at land north west of the village boundary at Gorsedd Bran.
Each of these turbines is believed to have a capacity of 3.5mw, compared to the 0.85mw output of the Tir Mostyn turbines.
Speaking on behalf of Nantglyn residents, Jane Yorke said there is ‘fear and anxiety’ in the community regarding the development at Gorsedd Bran.
“The open day today in the village did nothing to allay the fears of locals over the increased noise disturbance anticipated from this development.
“Indeed the individual responsible for environmental issues stated openly that the discomfort of a ‘few individuals’ would not outweigh the ‘greater good’ created by this development,” Mrs Yorke claimed.
Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch county councillor Paul Marfleet said he has received a number of complaints from residents regarding the increase in windturbines around Nantglyn.
“The residents of Nantglyn have gone ballistic about
these proposals. My phone has not stopped ringing and people are contacting me asking what they can do to halt these proposed developments. I have been inundated with complaints,” he said.
“A significant number of Nantglyn residents are already severely impacted by noise from the Tir Mostyn turbines and now fear that their problems are going to be worsened beyond belief.
“The new developers are telling concerned residents that their turbines will be newer technology and shouldn’t therefore give out the same noise. They are missing the point.
“The noise is not coming from the turbines’ gearboxes; it is coming from the sheer weight of air pressure as each blade passes the tower.
“Each turbine creates a massive triple vortex of air. As each of the three blades passes the tower, this force of air resonates like a gigantic fan that is meeting resistance. Multiplied by three blades per turbine and by the number of turbines, this makes residents think they are living 24 hours each day next to a gigantic washing machine,” he added.
“I accept that TAN8 is ratified and I accept that the Denbighshire/Conwy Interim Planning Guidance is now approved, but I need to now represent quality of life issues for the people of Nantglyn.”
