Islip, Babylon to voice concerns about wind farm

The Town of Islip is joining with Babylon Town in raising “serious concerns” about the Long Island Power Authority’s proposed wind-farm project. Supervisors for the towns have scheduled a briefing for today at LIPA’s Uniondale headquarters at 11 a.m., when power authority trustees are due to meet. Islip and Babylon are demanding answers about the cost, visual impact, and energy output of the controversial 445-foot-high wind-turbine proposal. Newsday reported last year that the 40 turbines, to be located 3.5 to 5 miles off Jones Beach, will cost at least $356 million, according to documents obtained under a Freedom of Information Law request. Other documents indicated the cost from contractor FPL Energy have increased substantially from that early eastimate, primarily because of increased costs for raw materials. LIPA, which says the renewable energy source is needed to reduce reliance on foreign oil, has thus far declined to release the final costs.
