Plans to significantly expand a wind farm in Dumfries and Galloway have been given Scottish Executive approval.
The Windy Standard development near Carsphairn will add 30 new turbines to the existing 36, taking its capacity up to more than 100 megawatts.
It will make the development – which became operational in 1997 – one of the biggest wind farms in the UK.
Deputy enterprise minister Allan Wilson said it would help to meet the executive’s renewable energy targets.
“The last few weeks have seen a number of significant announcements on renewable energy, not least £13m to support the roll-out of wave and tidal projects,” he said.
“However, on-shore wind energy still has a huge role to play in the drive to increase the amount of clean, green energy produced in Scotland.”
Energy targets
He said the Windy Standard expansion would enable it to almost meet the power needs of all the homes in Dumfries and Galloway.
“It was recently announced that the executive’s target of 18% of energy consumed in Scotland from renewable sources has been met years ahead of schedule,” he said.
“We must now push on to ensure that our target of 40% by 2020 is achieved.
“The extension of Windy Standard should help ensure this becomes a reality.”
