Next week Shetland’s public will have their first opportunity to discuss the proposals for Viking Energy’s huge wind farm project on the isles.
A full programme of meetings will be held where local people, community councils and other groups will be asked to look over plans that show potential locations for the 200 wind turbines in Shetland’s central and north mainland, particularly the Lang Kames.
Viking Energy chairman Drew Ratter said: “I know people are keen to discuss this venture and we are now at a stage to have those discussions. We are looking forward to the public meetings where we can talk to folk face to face.
“The Viking wind farm is a development of a scale unseen in Shetland in recent history. We believe the benefits to Shetland have the potential to be as positive as the agreements reached with the oil industry.”
A lot of environmental research has been undertaken into analysing the best place to build the wind farm project and a consultation layout has been drawn up
This layout, along with full details of the project and answers to common questions are to be distributed in the form of a prospectus.
Mr Ratter added: “I want to extend an invitation to everyone to come along and find out all about the scheme.
“It’s important now to find out if people agree with the proposals, and how they might be adjusted to meet any concerns, before we put in a planning application later in the year.”
