Wind turbines to be built abroad

Wind turbines destined for two sites off the Lincolnshire coast will not be built locally.

Engineering firm Siemens has won a £260m contract to build the two wind farms but the turbines will be constructed in Denmark, officials said.

The company has a base in Lincoln but said this branch specialised in industrial turbines, not those to be installed near Skegness.

It is hoped the two wind farms will provide energy for 140,000 homes.

In a statement, Siemens said: “Although the wind farms will be designed by engineers from Denmark, when construction begins, local suppliers will benefit.”

The project is backed by British Gas and work could begin on the sites – one in Lynn, three miles off Skegness and Inner Dowsing, three miles north of Skegness – by May.
