The ESB says the destruction of one of its wind turbines in Buncrana over night was due to an overheating generator which caught fire.
Emergency services attended the scene and put out the fire. No-one was injured as the windfarm was unmanned at the time of the blaze.
The 10 turbine farm at Sorne Hill in Buncrana has been shut down for the time being.
ESB spokesperson Kevin McDermott says the overnight events may have led to a spectacular sight but will have no impact on customer supply.
