The Union for the Co-ordination of Transmission of Electricity has just reported on the November 4 “house-of-cards” grid crash, which blacked-out 15 million customers from Iberia to the Balkans.
The report attributes much blame to wind power in a scenario which is exactly what many of us have been predicting for years.
“Tripping of wind generation with an estimated value of 6200MW (approximately 5400MW located in the north of Germany and 800MW in Austria) played the crucial role in decreasing frequency during the first seconds of the disturbance.” (Source: www.ucte.org/pdf/Publications/ 2007/Final-Report-20070130.pdf
The wind industry represents opposition as a Nimby concern with scenery (“What’s wrong with that – I’d like to know”) but this is just is not true. The real worry is security of supply and the astronomical cost, economic and environmental, of protecting it, if the renewables madness continues.
If we do not learn from this fact of history, the UK is destined to repeat it. For politicians to persist against such evidence, that our security of supply is threatened, seems to me near to treason.
