Giant wind turbines could be set to transform the Peak skyline after energy bosses submitted plans for electricity-producing constructions.
Carsington Wind Energy Ltd wants to build four turbines on land owned by farmer Edwin Mosley at Carsington Pastures, three kilometres west of Wirksworth.
The firm says the turbines would produce enough electricity to cover the needs of 5,590 local homes ““ preventing the annual emission of 22,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide which would be produced by a fossil fuel-burning power station.
Neil Exton, land and development manager for West Coast Energy, Carsington Wind Energy’s parent company, said: “The long-term objective of this wind farm is to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, widely recognised as the primary cause of global warming which is considered to be the most serious problem facing the world today.”
Mr Mosley said: “The aim is for the wind farm to benefit the local economy and I hope that if planning permission is granted, local firms and individuals will be involved in the construction process.”
The Government has set the objective that ten per cent of electricity must be generated from renewable sources by 2010.
A Derbyshire Dales District Council spokeswoman confirmed that the planning application had been submitted by Carsington Wind Energy Ltd. A decision is expected to be made in June.
