RALEIGH – Supporters and opponents of a proposed wind farm in Ashe County testified this morning before the N.C. Utilities Commission, which must decide whether to authorize the proposal.
A developer wants to build large wind turbines for the generation of commercial power. The idea has sparked significant opposition from local residents, who say the wind farm would ruin the natural habitat.
“If you approve this project, you will make the people of Ashe County suffer, and suffer badly,” said Steven Rose, who has residences in Carrboro and the Ashe County community of Warrensville. “You can have a good thing, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good thing in every situation. Sometimes you have to put two good things on the scale and weigh them,” he said.
Supporters said that the wind farm would be an environmentally friendly energy source. Phil Stanley of Lansing said that it would help the local economy.
“This is a boon to the county. It’ll bring in money. Hopefully it’ll lower taxes,” Stanley said.
The utilities commission is not expected to rule on the wind farm today. It may take a month or more before the commission issues a decision.
