Winds of change give village hope

Campaigners fighting plans for three wind farms near Roos say they have been given fresh hope they will be rejected.

Residents worried about the industrialisation of their rural surroundings are delighted councillors are considering their options before approving proposals put before them.

They spoke out after East Riding Council’s planning committee rejected plans for a 12-turbine site at Routh, near Beverley, on Tuesday.

At the same meeting, at County Hall in Beverley, councillors deferred their decision on plans for a 12- turbine site at a disused airfield in Lisset, near Driffield, until they receive more information.

Councillors said they needed further details on how the plans might affect tourism in the area.

Roos resident and South Holderness Opposes Wind Turbines chairman Cherie Blenkin said: “I attended the planning meeting myself as I believe it is the only way to hear both sides of the story.

“I was pleased the wind farm at Routh was rejected and was delighted the councillors took a step back before making a decision over Lissett to look at the bigger picture first.

“Councillors seriously debated the issue for the site at Lissett before saying they didn’t have enough information, which is very promising as it proves they are not making rash decisions.

“Further testing should now be done.”

Power firm E.on has submitted plans for a three-turbine site at Tedder Hill, between Roos and Rimswell.

Renewable Energy Systems has submitted plans for an 11-turbine site at Sunderland Farm, near Roos, and Aeolian has proposals for a two-turbine site between Roos and Burton Pidsea.

Mrs Blenkin said: “It’s promising that the wind farm at Routh was turned down because of the effects on views of Beverley Minster.

“In Roos we have All Saints’ Church, a grade-one listed building Lord Of The Rings author Tolkein used as an inspiration for his trilogy.

“If the turbines were approved they would sit either side of the church and cast a huge shadow over it.”
