Transmission options

Ross Finnie raises an important issue in his interview (24 January) when he questions the need to examine grid development and access to the grid for renewable energy development.

Answering these questions is crucial to the decision on how to transport electricity generated from renewable sources from the northern mainland of Scotland as well as Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles, to demand centres further south.

Why, then, has the Scottish Executive, through the reporters appointed to conduct the forthcoming public inquiry into the proposed Beauly-Denny powerline development, refused the request to carry out a strategic environmental assessment into the various transmission options?

Why is the Executive refusing to conduct a proper evaluation of the merits of the route, with its massive potential impact on some of the finest wildland scenery in western Europe, when compared to an east coast route, largely involving additional cables on existing pylons, or undersea routes?
