The attorney who advises Ashe County government said yesterday that he no longer represents a client who is trying to establish a wind farm because the issue has become a conflict of interest with the county.
Until last week, County Attorney John Kilby had been representing Richard Calhoun, a former Ashe County commissioner who has applied to the N.C. Utilities Commission to build 25 to 28 windmills in the Creston community.
Kilby said that county commissioners were aware he was representing Calhoun in the matter, but he had told them in closed session that if it became a problem he would stop representing Calhoun.
An N.C. Utilities Commission hearing Thursday drew an overflow crowd to a courthouse room. Kilby said he had withdrawn as Calhoun’s counsel two days earlier when it became clear that the county government would become involved in the issue.
Ashe County commissioners will consider an ordinance regulating wind-energy generation during a called meeting that starts at 5 p.m. today at the Ashe County Courthouse, 150 Government Circle.
