The U.K. government and local authorities should use more tax breaks and subsidies to promote low-carbon energy production, a group of British lawmakers said.
“Local energy” generation from equipment such as solar panels or wind turbines “is capable of making a major contribution” to the U.K.’s electricity and heat supplies, the Trade and Industry Committee said today in an e-mail.
Such products can help control climate change and enhance the security of energy supplies, the group said. Low-carbon heat is potentially three times more effective at reducing carbon dioxide emissions than low-carbon power generation, it said, and should be included in renewable energy incentive plans.
The U.K. needs to build new energy-supply infrastructure and facilities to replace aged power plants with lower-carbon energy sources. Conventional generating capacity will need to be replaced on a like-for-like basis “in the next few years,” the committee said. Local energy can make “a major contribution in the long-term to the nation’s energy requirements.
