A commercial wind farm scheduled to go online this year near Kenyon will be one of the state’s largest.
The farm, which is awaiting approval from the state, will generate enough electricity to power about 6,200 homes, or a town slightly smaller than Red Wing.
Xcel Energy Inc. will buy electricity from the farm, owned by Kenyon Wind LLC, a group of private investors.
“We didn’t win the lottery. This is just something we sincerely believe in,” said John Daniels Jr., Kenyon Wind’s chief manager. “Renewable energy is an important thing to do.”
The $20 million project will disturb 55 acres of farm land, according to an application submitted by Kenyon Wind to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission.
Only eight of Minnesota’s 66 wind farms produce more energy than the Kenyon project is expected to.
Some Kenyon area residents are worried the nine turbines on 262-foot towers will be noisy eyesores and will hurt property values.
Kenyon is about 33 miles southwest of Red Wing.
