Plan unveiled for South Mainland windfarm

Plans have been lodged for a second private windfarm in Shetland on a hill high above Quarff and Fladdabister.

At nine megawatts, the Sheens of Breitoe windfarm would be more than twice as powerful as the existing one at Burradale.

The company behind the 10-turbine plan is MD Developments (Shetland), formed by the local businessmen involved in Shetland Aerogenerators’ successful Burradale windfarm.

Standing at up to 224 metres, the Sheens of Breitoe are almost as high as the Ward of Bressay and stretch a full 76 metres higher than the summit of Burradale, which should guarantee some of the strongest winds Shetland can muster.

The turbines’ prominence would also make them a landmark to be seen from all over Shetland on a clear day.

The company envisages using 900 kilowatt generators, slightly bigger than the two largest turbines at Burradale, which are rated at 850kw, and substantially bigger than the three original turbines of 660kw.

The project is at an early stage and depends on the outcome of a study being carried out to assess whether the local electricity grid can handle the load from another provider of windpower.

Project manager Michael Thomson said the company was also looking at ways of storing surplus power when it is not needed immediately in Shetland, such as converting it into hydrogen fuel.
