Mexican retailer Organizacion Soriana and joint venture partner Vientos del Istmo SA plan to invest $300 million (euro232 million) in a wind-driven power plant in the state of Oaxaca.
In a filing with the Mexican Stock Exchange on Monday, Soriana said the plant will start operating in the second half of 2009 with an initial capacity of 216 megawatts, which could rise to 396 megawatts in the future.
“The plant is designed to generate enough energy to supply all of the electrical energy needs of Soriana in the medium-term,” the retailer said. Soriana cited rising electricity costs as the main reason behind its backing for the project.
Vientos del Istmo already has the necessary permits from Mexico’s Energy Regulatory Commission, or CRE, to proceed with the project, Soriana said.
Last year, CRE granted cement maker Cemex SA a permit to build a 250-megawatt wind-driven power plant in the Tehuantepec Isthmus of southern Mexico.
Mexican law allows private companies to generate electricity for their own use, although transmission, distribution, and public service in Mexico is restricted to state-owned utilities.
